The effect of lateral confinement due to very close side walls, on erosion caused by a water jet issuing from a rectangular sluice aperture, has been studied experimentally in a narrow laboratory flume. Velocimetry (PIV) in presence of a smooth, no erodible bottom, revealed self-similar velocity profiles with the structure of a wall jet, but upward-shifted with respect to the classical two-dimensional profile. The classical definition of the Shields number was modified, to include the influence of the relative roughness and the inlet aspect ratio. This last coefficient was also relevant in the definition of a suitable length scale to account for the effect of the lateral confinement. Scour patterns in the narrow flume have also shown differences with respect to erosion by two-dimensional wall jets: the downstream mound undergoes a morphological transition, from triangular to trapezoidal, at the early stage of the scour development, and grains move downhill driven by gravity inside the granular wedge, in a regime of steady recirculation (SR). Above this regime, a digging-refilling (DR) cycle, with periods of the order of seconds, triggers at a well-defined Shields number.

Local scour downstream of the release structure is a critical problem to the safe and stable operation of water resources and hydropower engineering. In order to investigate the shape and depth of the scour hole under the equilibrium state of erosion and deposition downstream of an apron, a group of 16 experiments from the hydraulic similarity model test of Dangka Hydropower Station was conducted with the non-cohesive sediment of different median particle sizes under different flow rates in this study. The control variable method was to study the influence of the flow rate and sediment size on the shape of the scour hole to define the number of experiment times of each test group. The results showed that the plane shape of the scour hole was irregular ellipse or semi-ellipse. The depth and size of the scour hole increased with the increase of the flow rate, and decreased with the increase of the sediment size; the downstream longitudinal slope ratio of the scour hole increased with the increase of the sediment size. The coefficients of the upstream and downstream slope ratio of the local scour hole were 1/2 to 1/6 and about 1/10, respectively.

Sluice gate operation is necessary to keep the continuity the design discharge. The mis-operation of sluice gate occurs endanger stucture and destruct the bed irrigation channel. Investigation about sluice gate operation and bed configuration are needed to avoid the destruction of the structure bed irrigation channel. The changes in bed form result from interaction of the flow, fluid and bed material. The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of different flow parameter, height of opening gate and types of bed material. Fourty five runs were executed at different discharge started from 1.0 l/s to 5.0 l/s with an increment of 0.5 where each discharge has five different opening gate to get all characteristics of bed configuration. The material used in the experiments were sandy loam. The experimental were conducted in an acrylic side flume with recirculating water at Applied Hydraulics Laboratory in Water Resources Engineering Faculty, Brawijaya University, Malang, Indonesia. The result of investigation showed that the bed configuration of sandy loam is ripple for most of the condition. At the same opening gate and various discharge the configuration is start by plane bed (no motion) and ripplee. Meanwhile, for the same discharge at the various opening gate occurs the ripple bed configuration. The various velocity that occur during the runing process cause the changing of bed configuration. For the greater discharge at the same opening gate occur the highest velocity. This condition cause the grain sediment material of the bed channel lift up and start to moving. This result is suitable with equation approaches from the van Rijn, Simon Richardson and Garde Albertson.
