Effects of Eye Drops Containing a Mixture of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids and Hyaluronic Acid on the Ocular Surface in Desiccating Stress-induced Murine Dry Eye

Abstract: Topically applied eye drops containing a mixture of omega-3 EFAs and HA could improve corneal irregularity and corneal epithelial barrier disruption, and decrease inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers on the ocular surface. Topical omega-3 EFAs and HA mixture may have a greater therapeutic effect on clinical signs and inflammation of dry eye compared with HA artificial tears.

“…26 Based on the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of dry eye disease, many antioxidants, including sea buckthorn oil, green tea polyphenols, and omega-3 essential fatty acids, have been demonstrated to decrease inflammation in corneal epithelial cells and improve the tear film and ocular surface in experimental or clinical dry eye. [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] In our study, we demonstrated the efficacy of a mixture of four natural plant EtOH extracts, including Schizonepeta tenuifolia var. japonica Kitagawa, Angelica dahurica Bentham ET hooker, Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz var.…”

“…Human serum and plasma-derived products such as autologous serum eye drops and autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) have been demonstrated to be beneficial in PEDs and dry eye disease [Jeng and Dupps, 2009;Hussain et al, 2014;Alio et al, 2015;Tseng et al, 2015;Soni and Jeng, 2016]. The mechanism of action reported to be decreasing cytokines and inhibiting oxidative stress [Li et al, 2014]. PRP contains more EGF and TGF-b than 50% autologous serum and is showed to be more efficient with a higher cure rate compared to 50% autologous serum in patients with PEDs [Kim et al, 2012].…”

“…Omega-3 plays important roles in human biology through decreasing cytokines and inhibiting oxidative stress [47]. It is an anti-inflammatory agent that prevents apoptosis in ocular tissues and can reduce tear osmolality and increase tear production in patients with dry eye disease [48][49][50].…”

“…However, there is no evidence of its significant effectiveness in meibum lipid composition [50]. A topical form of omega-3 fatty acid in combination with hyaluronic acid could successfully treat dry eye in a mouse model [47].…”
