“…In addition to omega-3 PUFAs alone, which showed promising results as described above [14], when combined with resistance training, omega-3 PUFA supplements significantly augmented the benefits of exercise intervention [134][135][136]. The triple combination of exercise program and protein/omega-3 PUFA supplementation proved a mild but significant additive effect on muscle mass increase, compared to the exercise intervention alone [137]. Although the effects of omega-3 PUFAs varied in the combinatory treatment, probably due to the dose and duration of supplementation, these outcomes collectively suggest that omega-3 PUFA supplements, alone or combined with physical exercise, might have a beneficial effect to sarcopenic older adults.…”

“…In China, patients undergoing an endurance and resistance exercise training program over 12 weeks, with or without daily nutritional supplementation (231 kcal, 8. [42]. The beneficial effects of combined nutritional and exercise interventions on sarcopenia parameters were also confirmed in Japanese older women in a 3-month resistance and balance exercise plus daily 6 g amino acid supplementation [43].…”

“…Based on the latest published data 13 on a similar study employing the same exercise programme (designed by our project team) with or without nutritional supplement (milk formula), the outcome of muscle strength by leg extension (one repetition maximum) (kg) in sarcopenic subjects after 3 months (12 weeks) were 14.81±4.86 kg, 18.57±8.56 kg and 17.21±5.84 kg. Based on the actual sample size from this reference study (n=403 637), and the average SD of ±6.3 kg, the calculated effect size was 0.248 which was of moderate effect size.…”

“…A flow diagram of the whole trial is shown in figure 1. This RCT will have three arms to investigate the effect of (1, EXE + HMB) combined treatment of elastic-band exercise (30 min/day) 13 and HMB supplementation (at 3.0 g/ day) 9 for 3 months; (2, VT + HMB) combined treatment of vibration exercise (at 35 Hz, 0.3 g and 20 minutes/day) 8 and HMB supplementation (at 3.0 g/ day) against (3, CTRL) a control group of sarcopenic subjects with no intervention. Prior to screening, all the three groups will receive the same level of educational talks and each subject will be given a booklet containing diet and exercise strategies.…”
