Nutritional Intervention to Prevent the Functional Decline in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Aging is a global public health concern. From the age of 50, muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance tend to decline. Sarcopenia and frailty are frequent in community-dwelling older adults and are associated with negative outcomes such as physical disability and mortality. Therefore, the identification of therapeutic strategies to prevent and fight sarcopenia and frailty is of great interest. This systematic review aims to summarize the impact of nutritional interventions alone or combined with o… Show more

“…On the other hand, nutrition can be a useful intervention to delay aging and treat aging-related diseases [ 125 , 126 ]. These interventions include caloric restriction [ 127 , 128 , 129 , 130 , 131 ], variations in macronutrient ratios [ 132 , 133 ], dietary supplementation with probiotics [ 134 , 135 , 136 ], vitamins [ 137 , 138 ] and antioxidants [ 139 , 140 ], among many others.…”

“…Thus, malnutrition screening is recommended routinely in IBD patients [34], but its relationship with physical activity is poorly described. In other populations such as older adults, cancer patients, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, the evidence for the benefits of exercise combined with nutritional support, over nutritional interventions alone, or physical exercise alone, are well documented [35][36][37]. The positive effects of such combined support include improved muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, quality of life, and decreasing hospital length of stay.…”

“…Several reports have shown the protective potential of nutrients for muscular health [9][10][11]. In particular, supplementary and dietary proteins play an important role in the maintenance of muscle mass and strength [9,10].…”
