One of the major merits of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite as an efficient absorber material for the photovoltaic cell is its long carrier lifetime. We investigate the role of the intrinsic defects of CH3NH3PbI3 on its outstanding photovoltaic properties using density-functional studies. Two types of defects are of interest, i.e., Schottky defects and Frenkel defects. Schottky defects, such as PbI2 and CH3NH3I vacancy, do not make a trap state, which can reduce carrier lifetime. Elemental defects like Pb, I, and CH3NH3 vacancies derived from Frenkel defects act as dopants, which explains the unintentional doping of methylammonium lead halides (MALHs). The absence of gap states from intrinsic defects of MALHs can be ascribed to the ionic bonding from organic-inorganic hybridization. These results explain why the perovskite MALHs can be an efficient semiconductor, even when grown using simple solution processes. It also suggests that the n-/p-type can be efficiently manipulated by controlling growth processes.
The mammalian visual system, from retina to neocortex, has been extensively studied at both anatomical and functional levels. Anatomy indicates the cortico-thalamic system is hierarchical, but characterization of cellular-level functional interactions across multiple levels of this hierarchy is lacking, partially due to the challenge of simultaneously recording activity across numerous regions. Here, we describe a large, open dataset (part of the Allen Brain Observatory) that surveys spiking from units in six cortical and two thalamic regions responding to a battery of visual stimuli. Using spike cross-correlation analysis, we find that inter-area functional connectivity mirrors the anatomical hierarchy from the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. Classical functional measures of hierarchy, including visual response latency, receptive field size, phase-locking to a drifting grating stimulus, and autocorrelation timescale are all correlated with the anatomical hierarchy. Moreover, recordings during a visual task support the behavioral relevance of hierarchical processing. Overall, this dataset and the hierarchy we describe provide a foundation for understanding coding and dynamics in the mouse cortico-thalamic visual system..
AIM:To investigate the clinical implications of lipid deposition in the pancreas (fatty pancreas).
METHODS:The subjects of this study were 293 patients who had undergone abdominal computed tomography (CT) and sonography. Fatty pancreas was diagnosed by sonographic findings and subdivided into mild, moderate, and severe fatty pancreas groups comparing to the retroperitoneal fat echogenicity.
RESULTS:Fatty pancreas was associated with higher levels for visceral fat, waist circumference, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, free fatty acid, γ-GTP, insulin, and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) than the control group (P < 0.05). HOMA-IR, visceral fat, triglyceride, and ALT also tended to increase with the degree of fat deposition in the pancreas on sonography. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, HOMA-IR, visceral fat, and ALT level were independently related to fatty pancreas after adjustment for age, body mass index, and lipid profile. The incidence of metabolic syndrome in the fatty pancreas group was significantly higher than in the control group, and the numbers of metabolic syndrome parameters were significantly higher in the fatty pancreas group (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Sonographic fatty pancrease showed higher insulin resistance, visceral fat area, triglyceride, and ALT levels than normal pancreases. Fatty pancreas also showed a strong correlation with metabolic syndrome.
Here we report that the transcription factor CREB-H is required for the maintenance of normal plasma triglyceride (TG) levels. CREB-H deficient mice displayed hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) secondary to inefficient TG clearance catalyzed by lipoprotein lipase (Lpl), partly due to defective expression of the Lpl coactivators, Apoc2, Apoa4, and Apoa5 and concurrent augmentation of the Lpl inhibitor, Apoc3. Multiple nonsynonymous mutations in CREB3L3 that produced hypomorphic or nonfunctional CREB-H protein were identified in patients with extreme HTG, implicating a critical role for CREB-H in human TG metabolism.
Background & Aims-The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a PAS domain transcription factor previously known as the "dioxin receptor" or "xenobiotic receptor." The goal of this study is to determine the endobiotic role of AhR in hepatic steatosis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
