Effects of Dietary Energy on Growth Performance and Carcass Quality of White Growing Pekin Ducks from Two to Six Weeks of Age

Abstract: A dose-response experiment with 6 dietary energy levels (2,600, 2,700, 2,800, 2,900, 3,000, 3,100 kcal of AME /kg) was conducted to study the effects of dietary energy on growth performance and carcass quality of White Pekin ducks from 2 to 6 wk of age. Six hundred 14-d-old White Pekin ducks were randomly divided to 6 dietary treatments, each containing 5 replicate pens with 10 males and 10 females per pen, and these birds were raised until 6 wk of age. At 42 d of age, weight gain, feed intake, and feed:gain o… Show more

“…Thereafter, feed intake on dry matter basis decreased. This is, possibly, because the chickens had met their energy requirements and hence there was no need to increase their intakes further (NRC, 1994;Fan et al, 2008;Mbajiorgu et al, 2011). The present optimal dietary energy values for intake are similar to those of Mbajiorgu (2010).…”

“…food quantity and quality) is a primary limiting factor influencing many physiological processes including reproduction (Fernandez-Fernandez et al, 2006;dos Santos et al, 2010), growth (Cox et al, 2008;Fan et al, 2008), development (Corbel et al, 2010) and the immune system (McGraw et al, 2006;Houston et al, 2007). Energetic status may also act as a proximate cue for timing reproductive activities in seasonal breeders (Hau et al, 2000;Schoech and Hahn, 2005).…”
