Effects of Diabetes on Post-Menopausal Rat Submandibular Glands: A Histopathological and Stereological Examination

Abstract: Objective: The menopause in elderly women is a physiological process where ovarian and uterine cycles end. Diabetes means higher blood glucose level that is a metabolic disease and has an increased incidence. The aim of the study was to examine the single or combined effects of menopause and diabetes that causes pathophysiological processes on submandibular gland on ovariectomy and diabetes induced rat models. Materials and Methods:Sprague Dawley twelve weeks old female (n=24) rats were divided randomly into f… Show more

“…In this research, secretory granules were accumulated in the apical cytoplasm of striated duct lining cellsattributed to oxidative stress and altered cytology of acinar and granular ductal cells which lead to changes in the secretory proteins and disturbed their secretory function [38] . Noteworthy, the striated ducts endocytose proteins are secreted by the acinar cells in a very low rate in normal animals, but under certain pathological conditions extensive endocytosis takes place to get rid of the abnormal proteins present in saliva before it reaches the mouth, which is considered as a defense mechanism [50] .…”

“…As a result, this secretory material accumulates in the cytoplasm of the acinar cells leading to cellular degeneration, atrophy of the cytoplasm and nuclei, and even cell death. This explains the induced structural changes such as widely separated shrunken acini, distortion and loss of some intralobular acini and ducts [38][39][40] .…”

“…Induction of diabetes with alloxan can cause certain functional and morphological changes in the submandibular glands affecting their secretions. This could be attributed to an oxidative stress causing degeneration and apoptosis in submandibular stromal cells [ 18 ].…”
