Effects of Cyclosporin and Somatostatin on Liver Regeneration after Partial Hepatectomy in Rats

Abstract: The major hepatic reaction which occurs in response to degeneration or partial loss of the liver is compensatory hyperplasia. After finding out that hemodynamic factors have no influence in hepatic regeneration, the investigations have been focused on some trophic factors which have been found in the blood and which have been believed to provide the basic control of regeneration. In our controlled experimental study we have tried to evaluate the effects on hepatic regeneration of cyclosporin and somatostatin w… Show more

“…These observations indicate that the early recovery of liver mass is not significantly influenced by CsA, an observation also made by others where liver weight restitution was studied for longer periods of time (Grant et al, 1988;Kahn et al, 1990;Kapan et al, 1996). The absence of a sustained effect of CsA on liver mass restitution indicates, contrary to earlier reports, little effect of the drug on the organ recovery, an observation also supported by our previous observations showing that CsA has only a selective effect on the drug metabolism recovery after 2/3 partial hepatectomy (Provencher et al, 1999).…”

“…In contrast, Ohtake et al [24] reported that following partial hepatectomy of rats, liver regeneration was stimulated, the cytotoxic effect of omeprazole was not observed, and the mitotic index of omeprozole-treated rats on the 3rd day was significantly increased compared to the control group. He showed that this result was due to omeprazole's ability to stimulate gastrin, which reportedly stimulates liver regeneration [43,44] . However, Chen et al [45] showed in their experimental study that gastrin is unlikely to be physiologically important in the regulation of liver growth and regeneration.…”
