Effects of Calcium Source, Inulin, and Lactose on Gut‐Bone Associations in an Ovarierectomized Rat Model

Abstract: Scope Osteoporosis poses a health challenge especially for postmenopausal women. This study aims to explore nutritional strategies to counteract bone demineralization in ovarierectomized (OVX) rats. Methods and Results OVX rats (n = 49) are fed with one of six different diets, where two different calcium sources (dairy calcium or calcium carbonate) are provided alone or in combination with either inulin (5%) or lactose (0.5%). In addition, a calcium‐deficient diet is included. Calcium supplementation increases… Show more

“…The animals and diets have previously been described. [ 5 ] Briefly, 49 ovariectomized (OVX) rats were randomly divided to seven groups and fed with different diets ad libitum. After 6 weeks of intervention, the rats were sacrificed under anesthesia with hypnorm/midazolam and subsequently the femur from both hind limbs were dissected free and collected.…”

“…The compositions of seven different diets have previously been described in our former study. [ 5 ] Briefly, the diets included (1) calcium‐deficient diet: Altromin C1031 (Altromin International, North Rhine‐Westphalia, Germany) (calcium content 227 mg/kg); (2) dairy calcium‐enriched diet (DCa group): Altromin C1031 added 2% (w/w) Capolac® (containing ~25% calcium, Arla Food Ingredients, Viby, Denmark); (3) dairy calcium/lactose‐enriched diet (DCa‐La): Altromin C1031 added 2% (w/w) Capolac® and 0.5% lactose (Variolac, Arla Food Ingredients, Viby, Denmark); (4) dairy calcium/inulin‐enriched diet (DCa‐In): Altromin C1031 added 2% (w/w) Capolac® and 5% (w/w) inulin (Orafti HP, Beneo‐Orafti, Oreye, Belgium); (5) calcium carbonate‐enriched diet (CaC): Altromin C1031 added 0.5% (w/w) calcium carbonate (Sigma Aldrich); (6) calcium carbonate/lactose‐enriched diet (CaC‐La): Altromin C1031 added 0.5% (w/w) calcium carbonate; (7) calcium carbonate/inulin‐enriched diet (CaC‐In): Altromin C103 added 0.5% (w/w) calcium carbonate and 5% (w/w) inulin.…”
