Effects of azadirachtin on Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) and its compatibility with predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on strawberry

Abstract: Azadirachtin provided effective control of T. urticae and is compatible with the predatory mites N. californicus and P. macropilis. It is an excellent tool to be incorporated into integrated pest management for strawberry crop in Brazil.

“…In most strawberry crops, control of the spider mite is almost exclusively performed with the use of agrochemicals, whose environmental impact under certain circumstances can be quite significant (WATANABE et al, 1994;BERNARDI et al, 2013). In addition, the control of T. urticae is hampered by its high reproductive potential and low efficiency of products used, mainly due to the existence of several populations of this species resistant to acaricides such as abamectin and fenpyroximate (SAtO et al, 2009).…”

“…One of the alternatives is the reduction in the use of agrochemicals, aiming at the production of fruit free of toxic residues and healthy to consumers through the use of biological control with predatory mites associated to the use of natural products. (BeRNARDI et al, 2013).…”

“…In the present study; however, a higher mortality percentage was obtained using a commercial product in a concentration 75% lower. This can be attributed to the standardized formulation of the commercial product (BRITO et al, 2006;BERNARDI et al, 2012).…”

“…BERNARDI et al (2012) found that ICA at a concentration of 0.3%, after seven days of application, caused mortality in 79% of a population of adults and nymphs of T. urticae. The difference between the results can be related to the populations of the pest once immature mites might be more sensitive to azadirachtin than adults.…”

“…However, the resistance of this pest to such products has stimulated the search for new control methods, which include the use of plant species with insecticidal and acaricidal properties. In recent years, different studies have been reported the potential of essential oils and plant extracts for control of mites (BERNARDI et al, 2012;ATTIA et al, 2013).…”
