ABSTRACTThe bronze bug Thaumastocoris peregrinus is native from Australia and has been detected in Brazil since 2008, causing damages in eucalypt plantations. This insect feeds on the phloem-sap, preferentially on the oldest leaves, that evolves into chlorotic spots and later in bronze spots. In high infestations, plant defoliation may occur. Although the feeding damage results in losses, the efforts for monitoring are still scarce. Therefore, by using adhesive traps colored differently we sought to determine which color would be the best for monitoring this insect in eucalypt plantations. White and yellow traps are efficient for field monitoring and should be installed in the top of the trees located in the edge of the plots. Keywords: forest pests; Eucalyptus spp.; bug bronze. Potential of Trichilia pallida Swartz (Meliaceae) as a Source of Substances with Insecticidal Activity against the Tomato Leafminer Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)ABSTRACT -Organic and aqueous extracts of the Trichilia pallida Swartz (Meliaceae) were obtained for identification of fractions with insecticidal activity against the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). Leaf and twig freeze-dried aqueous extracts (FDA) were resuspended in water at 3% and sprayed, with the aid of a mini-atomizer, over tomato leaflets infested with newly-hatched larvae. Larval mortality at 5 and 10 days after infestation (DAI) were higher for leaf extracts. In a second set of experiments, leaf extracts at 1% (w/v) were obtained by maceration in hexane (HEX), dichloromethane (DIC) and methanol (MET), and tested as described above using acetone and water as control. DIC extracts were the most promising as a source of substances with insecticidal activity against larvae of T. absoluta. DIC leaf extracts were further processed and subjected to partition assays, producing fractions in HEX, MET, ethyl acetate (ETA), n-butanol (NBU) and water (WA). The 0.15% ETA and MET fractions obtained from the partition assay of DIC extracts showed the highest insecticidal activity against T. absoluta.KEY WORDS: Insecta, botanical insecticide, natural product, control RESUMO -A partir de extratos aquosos e não aquosos de Trichilia pallida Swartz (Meliaceae), objetivou-se identificar frações com atividade inseticida sobre a traça-do-tomateiro, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). Ciência Rural, Santa Maria, v.38, n.4, p.1125-1128, jul, 2008
The effects of crude extracts, fractions and isolated compounds from Vitex polygama Cham. and Siphoneugena densiflora Berg were evaluated on the development of Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith, a destructive insect pest of corn and several other crops. The extracts and fractions were incorporated into an artificial diet at 1 mg g(-1) and offered to the insect during its larval stage. Length and viability of larval and pupal stages as well as pupal weight were assessed. Isolated compounds were tested through superficial contamination of the diet at 0.1 mg g(-1). Weight and viability of ten-day-old larvae were determined. Methanolic and hydroalcoholic S. densiflora extracts caused 100% larval mortality, while leaf and fruit hydroalcoholic extracts from V. polygama were the most active. Among the isolated compounds, flavonoids presented the best insecticidal results, and tannins the best larval growth inhibition.
-two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is considered the main pest in strawberry crop. The control of this species is hampered by the low efficiency of products currently used, occurrence of populations resistant to acaricides and high reproductive potential of this pest. this leads to the use of pesticides and increased agrochemical residues in fruits. the use of resistant cultivars is considered the ideal control method because they maintain mite populations below levels of economic damage, minimize the environmental impact of pesticides at no extra cost to the farmer, and serve as an auxiliary tool in integrated pest management. In this sense, this study evaluated the resistance of strawberry cultivars to T. urticae by studying the development of its biological aspects. comparative biology experiments and non-preference tests for feeding and oviposition for spider mite were carried out in 16 strawberry cultivars under laboratory conditions. Based on results, it was found that camarosa, Florida Festival, IAc campinas and Sabrosa strawberry cultivars indicated the possibility of antibiosis type resistance to spider mite, influencing the preference to food, development and oviposition, indicating the existence of differentiated reaction in population development among cultivars. Index terms: two-spotted spider mite, comparative biology, antixenosis. DESENVOLVIMENTO DE Tetranychus urticae KOCH (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE) EM DIFRENTES CULTIVARES DE MORANGUEIRORESUMO -O ácaro-rajado, Tetranychus urticae Koch, é considerado a principal praga da cultura do morangueiro.
