Effects of a Randomized Controlled Trial of Transcendental Meditation on Components of the Metabolic Syndrome in Subjects With Coronary Heart Disease

Abstract: Use of TM for 16 weeks in CHD patients improved blood pressure and insulin resistance components of the metabolic syndrome as well as cardiac autonomic nervous system tone compared with a control group receiving health education. These results suggest that TM may modulate the physiological response to stress and improve CHD risk factors, which may be a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of CHD.

“…We believe that this is the same mechanism that acts reducing BP values while the subjects are listening to calm music and respiration rates are unaltered. Our findings regarding BP reductions during calm music are similar to other studies involving other interventions as meditation 20 and can be explained by the subjects relaxation over time, 1 as observed in other studies.…”

“…Yoga is the most common form of relaxation technique adopted in Indian culture since ancient time. 12 Among the yoga based relaxation techniques, deep relaxation technique (DRT), supine rest (SR) or shavasan, cyclic meditation (CM) has become topic of research focus, studied by several investigators in both health& diseased condition [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] . SR has been described as relaxation & awareness on the border between sleep and wakefulness, allowing contact with the sub conscious and unconscious mind 13 .…”

“…Various investigators investigated the effect of relaxation response on cardiac autonomic nerve function by assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) which is more sensitive, non invasive procedure to quantify cardiac parasympathetic and sympathetic activity 18,[20][21][22][23] .…”

“…11,12 Regular practise of meditation reduces catecholamine, adrenal-cortical hormones and may help reducing blood pressure. 13,14 Thus meditation can be useful as primary intervention strategy to prevent development of hypertension and its complications.…”
