Effects of a herbal gel containing carvacrol and chalcones on alveolar bone resorption in rats on experimental periodontitis

Abstract: Carvacrol and dimeric chalcones are the respective bioactive components of Lippia sidoides and Myracrodruon urundeuva, popular medicinal plants of Northeastern Brazil with proven antimicrobial and antiinflammatory properties. Periodontal disease is associated with inflammation and microbiological proliferation, thus the study aimed to investigate the effect of a topical gel based on carvacrol and chalcones in the experimental periodontal disease (EPD) in rats. Animals were treated with carvacrol and/or chalcon… Show more

“…In several studies with similar methodology 6,12,13,18 , but with different substances testing, was found decreased inflammatory response but was not shown difference on the measurement from the cemento-enamel junction, this fact probably occurs because the short time of analysis after application of substances, which is usually after seven days. Thus, further researches are necessary to observe how much time is appropriate to manage the substances for the recovery of bone loss.…”

“…Essential oils exert many properties such as antinociceptive (Franco et al, 2011), anticonvulsant (Oliveira, 2009), cardiovascular effects (Menezes et al, 2010), antimicrobial activity against cariogenic bacteria (Botelho et al, 2009a) and fungal fi laments as well (Botelho et al, 2007b). Some studies point out that those plant-derived essential oils may be an effective alternative to overcome microbial resistance (Botelho et al, 2008).…”
