Effectiveness of Neutral Detergent Fiber in Whole Cottonseed and Dried Distillers Grains Compared with Alfalfa Haylage

Abstract: Sixteen Holstein cows in midlactation were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effect of replacing alfalfa NDF with NDF from whole, linted cottonseed or dried distillers grains. Low and high fiber control diets (13 and 19% of dietary DM from alfalfa haylage NDF, respectively) were compared with diets designed to contain 13% of DM from alfalfa haylage NDF plus 6% of DM from either cottonseed NDF or distillers grains NDF. Dry matter intake, milk yield, and milk protein yield were lower from the … Show more

“…These behaviors could explain why average ruminai pH was not different in animals fed these diets, because both diets promote mastication and the corresponding salivation and buffering action. This result would confirm that in forage-free diets, the effectiveness of NDF from WCS is also equivalent to that of BS, as was stated by Clark and Armentano (1993) when WCS was compared with alfalfa haylage in lactating dairy cows fed a diet with a 30:70 forage to concentrate ratio.…”

“…Whole cottonseed is a nonforage fiber source used most commonly in Brazil as a source of protein and fat but also can be used to replace roughage. Clark and Armentano (1993) compared WLC to alfalfa haylage with mean particle length of 7.6 mm and determined that effective NDF content of the WLC was 1.3 times that of the haylage. Mooney and Allen (1997) estimated physical effectiveness of NDF in WLC to be 50 and 127% that of alfalfa silage cut long (11.4 mm) or short (5.8 mm), respectively.…”
