Effectiveness and Efficiency of Cross‐Border Knowledge Transfer: An Empirical Examination

Abstract: Based on a sample of 102 US organizations, this study examines the impact of knowledge characteristics, recipient learning intent, source attractiveness, and relationship quality on the effectiveness and efficiency of knowledge transfer from the international business affiliates of these organizations. Findings indicate that recipient learning intent and source attractiveness positively impact the effectiveness of knowledge transfer. In addition, recipient learning intent was found to have a positive effect on… Show more

“…Even though there are studies about the international transfer of individual environmental practices such as innovation (Beise and Rennings, 2005;Rennings et al, 2006;Popp, 2006Popp, , 2011Phene and Almeida, 2008), environmental management practices (Florida and Kelly, 1991;Szulanski, 1996), or knowledge (Gupta and Govindarajan, 2000;Pérez-Nordtvedt et al, 2008;Ockwell et al, 2010), we find no research on the relationship between CSR and the international transfer of environmental practices. It is significant to reveal the effect that CSR has on the international transfer of practices, and how to transfer and diffuse practices to the host country through foreign direct investment.…”

“…Three key antecedents of KT emerge from this body of research. They are (i) organizational characteristics (Bjorkman et al 2004;Minbaeva 2005;Simonin and Ozsomer 2009) (ii) characteristics of knowledge (Minbaeva 2007;Pak and Park 2004;Pérez-Nordtvedt et al 2008;Simonin 1999b;Schulz 2003) and (iii) relational aspects between the source and recipient units (Li 2005;Muthuswamy and White 2005;Tsai and Ghoshal 1998). As discussed earlier, most of these studies deal with conventional KT in DMNEs.…”

“…In the context of an agglomeration, a high level of trust between firms facilitates knowledge transfer by reducing the costs associated with searching for information (Hansen & Løvas;2004), and by enabling frequent interactions and efficient communication between the firms (Pérez-Nordtvedt, Kedia, Datta & Rasheed, 2008). Moreover, good relationships among the firms within an agglomeration allow for the establishment of feedback mechanisms, which improve the comprehension and assimilation of tacit knowledge.…”
