Reverse Knowledge Transfer from Overseas Acquisitions: A Survey of Indian MNEs

Abstract: Abstract: In this paper, we examine the effects of subsidiary level factors on reverse knowledge transfer (RKT) in MNEs from the emerging market of India (EMMNEs). We argue that subsidiary level competencies and capabilities play a vital role in persuading the parent EM-MNEs to initiate the RKT in their attempt to overcome the disadvantages they have. The competency levels of the subsidiary have been captured in terms of the role that the subsidiary has in the network and its host country endowments. In addit… Show more

“…Furthermore, we believe that TCE rationales cannot explain whether the firm will succeed in the host market and integrate its operations effective ly, particularly in the case of M&As. Indeed, studies drawing on RBV rationales have emphasised that, when acquisitions are made in developed markets, which are characterized by better quality resources and institutions, firms benefit more, especially in terms of post-acquisitio n management such as acquiring critical knowledge (Nair et al, 2015). Because the acquisitio n of superior resources such as knowledge is cited as the key motive for cross-border M&A strategies, an alternative performance measure for EMMs' international entry mode strategies is the degree of reverse knowledge transfer, namely how resources acquired abroad are returned successfully to their respective home markets to be exploited as a source of competitive advantage.…”

“…Such an extension will allow us to better understand not only how the emerging dragon multinationals manage their heterogeneous internationalization process, but also how some emerged dragon multinationals manage their established global operations. The current research on dragon multinationals has devoted a lot of attention to the question of how these firms engage in international expansion, researchers have only recently started to investigate how those already emerged or Bgraduated^dragon multinationals manage their established IB operations (Anderson, Sutherland, & Severe, 2015;Nair, Demirbag, & Mellahi, 2015). The most recent BCG's global challengers report (BCG, 2014) provides not only evidence, but also explanation about how a growing number of dragon multinationals have Bgraduated^from being latecomers to become global competitors or even leaders in their respective sectors.…”
