Effective Teamwork and Communication Mitigate Task Saturation in Simulated Critical Care Air Transport Team Missions

Abstract: Task saturation is observed in simulated CCATT missions. Nontechnical skills correlate with task saturation. Task saturation is associated with worsening physiologic derangements in simulated patients.

“…For instance, if an organization undergoes downsizing or restructuring, teams may have to adapt to working harder or longer with fewer people and a broader scope of work. Research from simulations of patient air transport in the military show that task saturation stemming from structural adjustments may be mitigated by effective teamwork (Davis et al 2014). We know little about how such organizational changes impacting team structure or composition may influence safety because the literature currently lacks longitudinal insight to these areas (Bell et al 2018).…”

“…It might be expected that teamwork might suffer when staff are task‐saturated. A study of simulated transfers by Critical Care Air Transport Teams (United States Air Force) (n = 16) showed 45 crisis events, with task saturation occurring in 49% . Teamwork (odds ratio (OR) 1.96) and communication (OR 2.08) were impaired with task saturation.…”

“…One of the benefits of studies such as ours is that the results can lead to changes in practice in a short period and increase patient safety by mitigating adverse events 19,29 . Although our study is limited in number of simulations, it has helped local stakeholders appreciate the importance of ISSs for both education and quality improvement purposes.…”

Our results were disseminated (meetings to policy and procedure committee, presentations) to participants and local stakeholders and has helped establish the foundation for further ISSs at our institution.…”
