Effective delivery of volatile biocides employing mesoporous silicates for treating biofilms

Abstract: Nanoparticulate delivery of biocides has the potential to decrease levels of exposure to non-target organisms, and miminize long-term exposure that can promote the development of resistance. Silica nanoparticles are an ideal vehicle since they are inert, biocompatible, biodegradable, and thermally and chemically stable. Encapsulation of biocides within nanoparticulates can improve their stability and longevity and maximize the biocidal potential of hydrophobic volatile compounds. Herein, we have shown that the… Show more

“…However, encapsulating or loading essential oils into nanoparticles is still a big challenge. In most of the process that was reported, large amounts of organic solvents or surfactants were used, and the drug loads were unsatisfactory (<10 wt%) [11,14,15]. Thus, nanoparticles in some film nanocomposite containing essential oil only played the role of improving the film mechanical properties, but not as a drug carrier [16].…”

“…Nanoparticles are a promising tool in the field of biomedicine, providing novel approaches for delivering agents in a targeted manner for therapeutic, imaging and diagnostic purposes [ 1 7 ]. For example, nano-sized polymer or mesoporous capsules can be synthesized and loaded with a therapeutic agent [ 5 , 7 , 8 ]. Ideally, the physico-chemical properties of the capsule allow for preferential interaction with a specific type of cell [ 5 , 7 ].…”

“…Thompson and co‐workers developed effective delivery of allyl isothiocyanate (AIT) and cinnamaldehyde (CNAD) by using MS NPs for treating biofilms . The release of both AIT and CNAD from MS showed a high initial rate over the first hour due to the steep concentration gradient established from within and outside the pores in the external solution or due to release of compounds adsorbed on the external surface of the NPs.…”
