Effect of vitamin D3on the antimicrobial activity of human airway surface liquid: preliminary results of a randomised placebo-controlled double-blind trial

Abstract: IntroductionVitamin D3 supplementation has been reported to prevent lung infections and increase the gene expression of antimicrobial peptides such as cathelicidin. We investigated the effect of vitamin D3 supplementation on the antimicrobial activity of airway surface liquid (ASL) in human subjects. Since smoking can increase the risk of respiratory infections, we also investigated the effect of smoking in the cathelicidin response to vitamin D3 in human airway epithelia in vitro.MethodsThis study is a subana… Show more

“…Vitamin D3 initiates its antibiotic function through the stimulation of antimicrobial peptides, including cathelicidin antimicriobial peptide (CAMP) (15,16). Cathelicidin is primarily produced by phagocytes and epithelial cells, and exerts biological functions by mediating defense against microbial invasion.…”

“…Right now, Vitamin D3 deficiency is a big problem because of the vast proportion of world civilization. In both smokers and non-smokers, low level of this vitamin raises propensity to respiratory infections and destitute mineralization of the skeleton owing to calcium besides phosphate diminution [24,25]. This kind of calcium depletion is the starting point for bone-related complaints.…”
