Effect of Vibration Massage Therapy after Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy in Patients with Lower Caliceal Stones

Abstract: This retrospective study demonstrates that SWL with vibration massage appears to have a beneficial effect on the passage of fragments in patients with lower caliceal stones.

“…Previous investigations demonstrated inverse correlations between stone-free rates (SFRs) and stone sizes [ 15 16 17 18 ] and reported on the risk of ureteral obstruction with the need for additional procedures [ 15 ]. Unfavorable factors for success of SWL include SWL-resistant stones, steep infundibular-pelvic angles, a long lower pole calyx (>10 mm), and a narrow infundibulum (<5 mm) [ 19 20 21 22 23 ]. Furthermore, SWL often requires multiple treatments and longer treatment periods than other surgical methods in patients with multiple stones.…”

“…The value of supportive measures, e.g. inversion, vibration or hydration, remains under discussion [10,18] . Thus, many factors have been implicated in impeding fragment clearance from the lower pole, but discussion continues and the topic remains controversial.…”

“…Patients were advised to use mechanical percussion and inversion therapy to enhance clearance. 7,8 Patients having prior SWL, prior stenting, complex lowerpole anatomy, and stone treated with more than one session of SWL were excluded from the analysis. Complex lower-pole anatomy was defined as crowding of the calices with gross dysmorphism on IVU.…”
