Current status of flexible ureteroscopy in urology

Abstract: Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is being performed for the surgical management of upper urinary tract pathology. With the development of surgical instruments with improved deflection mechanisms, visuality, and durability, the role of RIRS has expanded to the treatment of urinary calculi located in the upper urinary tract, which compensates for the shortcomings of shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. RIRS can be considered a conservative treatment of upper urinary tract urothelial cance… Show more

“…As taxas de sucesso verificadas na literatura variam grandemente entre 50% e 90% o que coloca os nossos resultados em razoável comparabilidade. 6,10,16 Ainda, a análise reporta-se a um período de utilização inicial da CIRR no nosso centro. Além disso, não se trata de uma serie prospetiva controlada, nem limitada no número de cirurgiões, devendo-se ter em conta as curvas de aprendizagem.…”

“…13 Other possible indications for RIRS treatment of renal stones include radiolucent stones, bleeding disorders, the patient taking anticoagulants, coexistence of ureteral and renal stones, and multiple renal stones unfeasible for SWL. 14 In general, although the first recommended treatment option for a renal stone >20 mm is PCNL, RIRS for such stones appears to be a viable option given the current state of the art and minimal invasiveness. According to several recent studies carried out in high-volume centers, the SFR of renal stones 20-35 mm in size is 71-96%.…”
