Effect of the synthetic pyrethroid Deltamethrin and the neem-based pesticide Achook on the reproductive ability of zebrafish, Danio rerio (Cyprinidae)

Abstract: Abstract. In the present research, both male and female zebrafish, Danio rerio (Hamilton), were exposed to 96-h LC5 values of Deltamethrin (0.016 µg dm -3 ) and Achook (0.025 µg dm -3 ) for three months. The fish were then returned to normal water and allowed to breed to permit observations of fecundity and hatchability. The results show significant reductions in fecundity and hatchability in comparison to the control group. Fecundity was reduced by 54.12% in the fish treated with Deltamethrin and by 17.81% in… Show more

“…Deltamethrin-associated inhibition in alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase in liver, muscle and ovary tissues of zebra fish, Danio rerio, has been observed by Sharma et al (2012). Alteration in antioxidant enzymes of Danio rerio has also been reported by Sharma and Ansari (2010). Ensibi et al (2013) also observed significant alteration in liver biomarkers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase and glutathione reductase.…”

“…The other responses included impairment of ontogenic process and reduction in hatchability of embryos of zebra fish. Similarly reproductive impairment in zebra fish was also reported by Sharma and Ansari (2010). Deltamethrin has also been reported to alter normal ion flux in Ancistrus multifilis (De Assis et al 2009).…”

“…Because of the universal utilisation of various chemical in crops and agricultural products, many herbicides, pesticides and fungicides are widely discharged in environmental soil and water, which may cause pollution and pose a serious threat not only to aquatic life and ecosystem but also to human [11,16,17,23,24,29]. Recent study demonstrated that atrazine (C 8 H 14 C l N 5 ) at concentration of more than 1 µM caused craniofacial defects which may be related to delayed vertebrae mineralization as well as malformation to the development of cartilage and bone of a zebrafish embryo [13].…”

“…Entre los efectos de los piretroides tipo II, como la deltametrina, se ha argumentado que también afectan la función motriz en concentraciones tan bajas del nivel de ng/L, además de producir efectos neurotóxicos, en el caso del pez cebra, puede reducir la fecundidad y la eclosión (De Micco et al 2010, Sharma y Ansari 2010.…”
