However, some of our results differ from those in that secretin, somatostatin and neurotensin stimulate growth and differentiation of the small intestine (Taboada et al 1985, Izukura et al 1990, Pollack et al 1990) and this can be due to the different experimental conditions chosen.…”

“…When somatostatin was administered 4 h before the experiment, the sucrase activity showed a similar trend but the changes were not statistically significant. This result agrees with those obtained in similar experiments in the rat (Taboada, Abalde, Suarez, Andres & Fernandez, 1985) and is likely to be related to a somatostatin effect in exocrine pancreatic secretion. Bile salts and proteases act directly on the intestinal wall (Dyck, Bonnet, Lasater, Stinson & Hall, 1974) and the enhanced enzyme activity obtained may be due to an increase in rate of release, or to a decrease in rate of degradation, or both.…”
