“…These data confirm those previously reported by Zahavi et al (1984) and Kaouass et al (1994t·) indicating that gut peptides such as cholecystokinin (CCK), gastrin, secretin and glucagon (1-37) did not play a role in growth and differentiation of the digestive tract mucosa. However, some of our results differ from those in that secretin, somatostatin and neurotensin stimulate growth and differentiation of the small intestine (Taboada et al 1985, Izukura et al 1990, Pollack et al 1990) and this can be due to the different experimental conditions chosen.…”

“…The main aim of the present study was then to define the biochemical nature of this link. We were particularly interested in bombesin, soma¬ tostatin, neurotensin and VIP because these peptides are known to influence both intestinal growth and/or the activity of the HAA in adult animals (Itoh et al 1982, Taboada et al 1985, Sander & Porter 1988, Izukura et al 1990, Karkashan et al 1992). …”

“…When somatostatin was administered 4 h before the experiment, the sucrase activity showed a similar trend but the changes were not statistically significant. This result agrees with those obtained in similar experiments in the rat (Taboada, Abalde, Suarez, Andres & Fernandez, 1985) and is likely to be related to a somatostatin effect in exocrine pancreatic secretion. Bile salts and proteases act directly on the intestinal wall (Dyck, Bonnet, Lasater, Stinson & Hall, 1974) and the enhanced enzyme activity obtained may be due to an increase in rate of release, or to a decrease in rate of degradation, or both.…”
