Effect of solvents on bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of Padina tetrastromatica and Gracilaria tenuistipitata seaweeds collected from Bangladesh

Abstract: Seaweeds are now recognized as a treasure of bioactive compounds. However, the bioactivity of seaweed originating in Bangladesh is still unexplored. So, this study was designed to explore the secondary metabolites and antioxidant activities of solvent extracts of Padina tetrastromatica and Gracilaria tenuistipitata. Phytochemical screening and FTIR spectra confirm the diverse type of bioactive compounds. Antioxidant activity of extracts were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2, 2-Azino-bis (3-… Show more

“…The type of solvent used to extract secondary metabolites has impact on their quality and quantity [ 18 , 19 ]. The influence of extracting solvents on total phenolics and antioxidant activities have also been reported by different authors [ 20 – 22 ]. The chemical components of the extracts and essential oils are dependent upon the species, genotype, environment, organ type, developmental phase, extraction methods, and other variables [ 17 ].…”

“…Similarly, in the Ag-NP spectra, O–H stretching at 3446.66, C–H stretching at 2922.63 and 2852.78, CC stretching at 1633.22, and NO stretching at 1383.76 indicate the presence of alcohol, alkane, and nitro groups, respectively. This is in accordance with the IR report and the previously published reports that P. tetrastromatica is rich in aldehydes, ketones, and phenol groups, which help to reduce and stabilize Ag-PTs.…”

“…simplex is a type of red seaweed that is a member of the Rhodophyta phylum. It is one of the most widely distributed types of red seaweed along the coastlines of the Egyptian Red Sea, and it has demonstrated a variety of active metabolites that have the potential to act as possible therapeutic agents [28,30]. It was reported that the kind of extraction solvent that was used had an impact not only on the chemical composition of these algal metabolites but also on the potential biological uses of these compounds [42].…”

“…These anticancer agents are the most effective treatments for cancer and are not toxic to normal cells. The cytotoxic and antioxidant effects of D. simplex chloroform extract have received insufficient attention, and published data on this species are mostly from waters other than the Egyptian Red Sea beaches [29,30]. It is also the first time a nanosuspension formulation based on this extract has been developed.…”
