EFFECT OF SEED PRIMING ON GERMINATION OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus var. Arka Anamika)

Abstract: Seed priming is an effective, eco-friendly method to promote seed germination and seedling vigor of okra to overcome the reduced and delayed germination in fresh or stored okra seeds caused by seed hardness. An experiment was carried to evaluate the effects of different priming on okra seeds germination and seedling vigor using Arka Anamika variety at Horticulture lab of Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal. Investigation was carried out with 6 treatments (T1: seed priming with tap water… Show more

“…Te enhanced germination observed in seed priming treatments might be due to the fact that the seeds were completing the pregermination process during seed priming, and GA 3 might afect the synthesis of hydrolyzing enzymes, particularly amylase and protease and the hydrolyzed food was utilized by the growing embryo and thereby enhancing the germination of seeds [31,32]. Consistent with others, the present results also showed a signifcant increase in germination percentage with different priming treatments [33]. Seeds primed with cow urine had a 15.6% higher germination percentage than untreated seeds of cotton [34].…”

“…Priming is a technique used in okra farming to enhance seed germination (Wahocho et al, 2023). Seed priming is an easy, affordable, and effective method for timing germination and encouraging early seedling growth (Lamichhane et al, 2021). This method achieves its objectives by enhancing seed vigor, breaking dormancy, accelerating germination, and promoting better overall plant establishment (Finch-Savage and Leubner-Metzger, 2006).…”
