Effect of pulsed current GTA welding parameters on the fusion zone microstructure of AA 6061 aluminium alloy

Abstract: AA6061 aluminium alloy (Al-Mg-Si alloy) has gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of food processing equipment, chemical containers, passenger cars, road tankers, and railway transport systems. The preferred process for welding these aluminium alloys is frequently Gas Tungsten Arc (GTA) welding due to its comparatively easy applicability and lower cost. In the case of single pass GTA welding of thinner sections of this alloy, the pulsed current has been found beneficial due to its advantages over the con… Show more

“…There are many influential process parameters which effect the weld quality characteristics of Pulsed Current MPAW process like peak current, back current, pulse rate, pulse width, flow rate of shielding gas, flow rate of purging gas, flow rate of plasma gas, welding speed etc. From the earlier works [6][7][8][9] carried out on Pulsed Current MPAW it was understood that the peak current, back current, pulse rate and pulse width are the dominating parameters which effect the weld quality characteristics. The values of process parameters used in this study are the optimal values obtained from our earlier papers [3][4][5].…”

“…Among the many alloys, 6061 and 7075 are commonly used in aeronautics, automotive and marine industries, construction, high‐quality bicycle components and other sporting equipment, camera lenses, firearms, electrical fittings, and aluminum cans in the food industry. [ 1–6 ] The chemical compositions and mechanical characteristics of these alloys are given in ref. [ 7 ] .…”

“…In addition, the mechanical nature of the weld juncture is better because it increases the liquid metal flow in the weld pool and then the minute alloying elements interrupting the growth of crystals in the solidification process [2][3][4]. However, it is difficult to set welding conditions because pulse parameters should be set compared with continuous current.…”
