Effect of pomegranate extract on vagina, skeleton, metabolic and endocrine profiles in an ovariectomized rat model

Abstract: In rats fed with pomegranate extract, estradiol levels increased and tibial bone cortex thickness and vaginal epithelium thickness also increased. Pomegranate itself or its formulation extracts may be a support or an alternative to the main treatment modalities in the preservation of bone density and the treatment of vaginal epithelial atrophy.

“…Some RCTs have shown that low- or ultra-low-dose HT is effective for the relief of menopausal symptoms and maintaining bone mass with fewer adverse effects in postmenopausal Chinese women. Isik Kaban et al [31] suggested that pomegranate itself or its formulation extracts may support or be an alternative to the primary treatment modalities in the preservation of bone density and the treatment of vaginal epithelial atrophy in menopause. Phytoestrogen preparations are generally considered to be a safe alternative to HT [32].…”

“…Further investigations claimed pomegranate extract containing polyphenols displays adequate efficacy on bone loss in menopausal women. It preserves bone mineral density and helps to increase the tibial bone cortex thickness by improving the estrogen level in the body (Hae‐yeon, 2009; Kaban et al, 2018; Mori‐Okamoto et al, 2004).…”
