Effect of Poly(acrylic acid)-Modified Poly(ethylene terephthalate) on Improving the Integrated Mechanical Properties of Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/Elastomer Blend

Abstract: The preparation of supertoughening poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends has always been a practical and valuable task. In our work, PET resins grafted with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), termed as PET-g-PAA, were first prepared through γ-ray radiation induced graft polymerization and blended in a partially miscible PET/ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate random terpolymer (ST2000) system as the compatibilizer. The impact strength of the PET blends achieves the maximum at a 6 wt % of PET-g-PAA, but… Show more

“…It is universally believed that the strong interfacial adhesion could induce matrix to generate crazes, shear bands, and plastic deformation during the impact process, thereby dissipating impact energy. Simultaneously, the crazes can be terminated by shear bands and will not develop into cracks . Thus, the key of effective toughening is to strengthen the interfacial adhesion …”

“…In addition, for stronger penetration, g-ray irradiation has been widely used to investigate the radiation effect and modication. [28][29][30] Therefore, in this work, g-ray radiation was used. It should be noted that even under g-ray irradiation, the radiolysis of the solvent and damage to the impurities cannot be avoided.…”

“…Recently, environmental policies for economizing raw materials are promoting the recycling of plastics [3] [4], and great interest is being drawn to recycled-PET (RPET). An interesting method for improving the mechanical and thermal properties of polymer materials is the blend technique [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]. Mechanical recycling by blending PET/RPET with other polymers has shown economic benefit and is a feasible solution for producing new polymer products.…”
