The study explicates the genotoxic effects of commercial grade cypermethrin on peripheral erythrocytes of Catla catla, chronically exposed to two environmentally relevant concentrations. The fish was treated with sub-lethal concentrations 0.12 μg/L and 0.41 μg/L (1/10th and /1/3rd of 96 h LC 50 ) of cypermethrin for 45 days. DNA damage in the exposed fish was assessed using alkaline comet assay, presence of micronuclei (MN), erythrocyte nuclear and cytoplasmic abnormalities.Exposure to cypermethrin induced a dose-dependent increase in percent DNA damage, micronucleus frequency and erythrocyte abnormalities. Nuclear anomalies such as notched nuclei, lobed nuclei, bridged nuclei, and deformed nuclei; and cytoplasmic anomalies like anisochromasia, vacuolated cytoplasm, lobed cells, and echinocytes were observed. The findings revealed the genotoxic potential of commercial formulations pyrethroid cypermethrin at concentrations found in the environment and their potential deleterious effects on nontarget aquatic organisms.

Insecticides are used across the world as it is evaluated that poses a risk to aquatic life especially fish, which are very sensitive in response to change in environmental conditions. The current study evaluated the effects of bifenthrin on Ctenopharyngodon idella's behavioral and hematology alterations. The acute toxicity 96-hr LC 50 of bifenthrin for grass carp was determined as 6.5µg/L. Fish were divided into four groups i.e., one control and three experimental groups having eight fish in each group. Control group was not exposed to bifenthrin. Experimental fish were exposed to sublethal (1/3 rd of LC 50 ) doses of bifenthrin i.e., 2.16 µg/L for 30 days. Behavioral parameters of C. idella were observed at acute as well as sub-lethal concentrations. It was observed that behavioral parameters of C. idella such as opercular movement, somersaulting activity, convulsions rate, air gulfing was significantly (p<0.05) increased by increasing the bifenthrin concentration. Fin movements and swimming rate was also increased with increase in bifenthrin concentration but at later stage fish became motionless and sluggish. Body color was changed from grey to pale and gills from bright to light red color as bifenthrin concentration increased. Blood parameters such as red blood cell counts (RBCs), White blood cell counts (WBCs), Hematocrit (Hct), Hemoglobin (Hb), Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) were measured at sub lethal exposure of bifenthrin after 15 and 30 days. The findings revealed that RBCs, Hb, Hct, PCV and MCHC were decreased significantly (p<0.05) and WBCs, MCV and MCH were increased significantly (p<0.05) after bifenthrin exposure. It was concluded that bifenthrin has potential to disturb the behavior and to alter the hematological profile of C. idella. The aim of present study is to explore the toxicity of insecticides.

Pesticides are widely used in modern agriculture to enhance the quantity and quality of yield in an effective and economical manner, leading to improved food security worldwide. Organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids are the four major groups of pesticides used. However, with increasing pesticide use, especially in developing countries, the risk of its toxicity caused by them is on the rise. Despite a low per hectare use of pesticides in India, their injudicious use has led to the presence of pesticide residues in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It has been observed that major riverine ecosystems like Ganges, Yamuna, Cauvery, Tapi and many others show the presence of pesticides in the water column as well as the river bed sediments. Pesticides tend to bioaccumulate in the food chain. Agricultural runoff into aquatic systems raises the risk of exposure of pesticides to non-target species, leading to adverse consequences on the ecosystem. In this review, an attempt has been made to critically review the usage of pesticides in India, their entry into riverine ecosystems and the impact of pesticides on freshwater microorganisms, invertebrates and vertebrates. The review of legislation in India to control pesticide usage shows that proper implementation of the laws is needed on an urgent basis.
