Effect of periodontal dressings on fibroblasts in vitro

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of four commercially available dressings (Coe, PPC‐Eugcnol, PPC‐Non Eugenol, and Ward's Wondr Pak) on a monolayer of cells, employing the cell culture assay plate assembly. Monolayers of L929 fibroblasts were grown out on the cell culture assay plates and stained with a vital stain, .01 % Neutral Red, 8 mm discs of prepared periodontal dressings, as well as sterile filter paper and high density polyethylene discs, which served as controls, were placed on the monol… Show more

“…Mouse fibroblasts (L 929, 3T3 cells), Hela cells, human epithelial cells, human gingival fibroblasts and leukocytes have been used (Hildebrand and De Rensis, 1974;Rivera-Hidalgo et al, 1977;Haugen and Hensten-Pettersen, 1978;Gilbert et al, 1994;Alpar et al, 1999). Soluble material leached from some formed dressings has been found toxic to cells in culture (Hildebrand and De Rensis, 1974;Rivera-Hidalgo et al, 1977) and dilution of soluble extracts from periodontal dressings decreased this toxic effect (Eber et al, 1989;Alpar et al, 1999).…”

“…Hildebrand and DeRenzis placed discs of four different formed dressings on monolayers of cultured fibroblasts. 14 Finally, Guglani and Allen studied the connective tissue reaction in rats to implants of a eugenol-contain ing and the same eugenol-free periodontal dressing used here. 7 While scored tissue reactions to each were "mild" 2 days following implantation, a "moderate" reaction to the eugenol-free dressing occurred by day 7 which was not produced with the eugenol-containing dressing.…”
