Effect of Operator Experience and Frequency of Procedure Performance on Complication Rate After Ultrasound‐Guided Percutaneous Liver Biopsies

Abstract: Major complications are infrequent after pediatric liver biopsies and no relation between operator experience and major complications was found. We found a significant, but minor, effect of operator procedure frequency on the rate of minor bleeding incidents after ultrasound-guided pediatric liver biopsies.

“…Westheim and coworkers investigated the impact of operator experience on complication rates following ultrasound‐guided paediatric liver biopsies. They showed a significant effect of operator experience on minor bleeding post procedure, which occurred more frequently in patients who were operated on by less experienced operators, but no effect on major complications . Lee et al evaluated the effect of operator experience on the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after primary treatment with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and found that the risk of HCC recurrence could be significantly decreased when the procedure was performed by an experienced RFA operator …”

“…Liver biopsy is considered the gold standard method for assessing other structural liver diseases. However, the heterogeneous distribution of fibrosis in Fontan liver disease often results in non-representative biopsy samples [4,[6][7][8][9]; hence, estimating the risk of complication, this invasive procedure is only justified in select cases. Current international recommendations for evaluating these patients are mainly based on expert consensus [3,5].…”

“…Liver parenchyma biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing fatty liver. However, this procedure only obtains a small portion of the liver, which can cause sampling bias in addition to being an invasive method requiring sedation in young children [ 10 ].…”
