Effect of operating parameters on mechanical expression of solvent-soaked soybean-grits

Abstract: Oil from soybean is obtained mostly by solvent extraction of soybean flakes. Legislation banning the use of hexane as solvent for extracting edible vegetable oil has forced a search for an alternative solvent and for developing a suitable oil recovery process. Expellers are being used for obtaining vegetable oil by mechanical means (expression) from oil seeds having oil content higher than 20 %. It was felt, in view of the stiffness of the soybean matrix, a combination of solvent treatment and expression could… Show more

“…Mechanical screw pressing is often used to extract plant oil from seeds having oil content higher than 20%. [ 31 ] There are two kinds of mechanical pressing, a) cold‐press and b) hot‐press extraction approaches. The cold‐press extraction is carried out at low temperature (below 50 °C) and pressure, but the hot‐press extraction is carried out at a high temperature and pressure.…”

“…The biodiesel quality is intricately associated to the grains oil extracted quality, mainly due to the stability of the compounds and the composition of the constituent fatty acids (Sinha et al, 2015; Yao et al, 2020). However, there is a necessity to optimize several practices and steps that can significantly contribute to the biodiesel production process (Myint & El‐Halwagi, 2009).…”

“…In normal operating conditions, screw pressure extraction usually allows the obtention of bigger yields than hydraulic extraction [33]. Mechanical extractions are commonly used to produce vegetable oil from oilseeds with an oil content higher than 20% [34].…”
