The use of plants as materials to control pests was known by traditional communities before the introduction of synthetic pesticides. The use of botanical pesticides has received important attention along with the negative impacts of using synthetic pesticides on health and environment. In the world, Indonesia is the seventh-largest country with the number of species of plant. There are estimated more than 20,000 spesies and 25 percent of them are flowering plants. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of several native plants of Karo Regency, that have the potential as botanical pesticides to control pests in horticultural crops. Botanical pesticides are made by extraction methods, and indicator plants for observing pest attacks are potatoes. The results based on the inventory and exploration at Karo Regency, there are 12 species of plants that are most often used by farmers as botanical pesticides to control pests in horticultural crops from family Meliaceae, Solanaceae, Caricaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Annonaceae, Rubiaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Amaryllidaceae. Botanical pesticide significantly reduced pest attack on plants, reduced population of Myzus pesicae and Phthorimaea operculella and increase potato yield. The most effective of botanical pesticides to control pests on potato plants were tobacco leaf extract, lemongrass extract, and soursop leaf extract, respectively.

Opaque soap is a solid soap product. It was made from a mixture of oil and the addition of alkaline compounds to form a saponification process. Solid soap preparations made with the addition of tobacco extract as an active ingredient that contains nicotine compounds, which include toxic alkaloids are weakly basic. In addition, tobacco extracts chosen to produce products that were beneficial to society. The purpose of this study was to provided wider use of tobacco and to know the characteristic of opaque soap preparations with the addition of tobacco extracts. The research method was a single completely randomized design (CRD) with descriptive analysis. In this study, the formulas of opaque soap were A0 (no addition of tobacco extract), A1 (1.2 g of tobacco extract), A2 (2.4 g of tobacco extract), and A3 (4.8 g of tobacco extract). The observed parameters were chemical and microbiological characteristics. All variations of opaque soaps had a pH of 9.51-9.77, water content of 13.15%-14.35%, free alkali 0.056-0.0584, antibacterial (E. coli inhibition zone proved by clear zone) about 8.60-21.50 mm; and nicotine levels 0-383.67 mg/100g. From the results due to chemical and microbiological characteristics, all of the opaque soap with additional tobacco extract was in accordance with the Indonesian National Standards (SNI 3532-2016) so that soap was safe for use by the public. The high consumption of cigarettes, especially in Indonesia, will produce harmful waste for the environment called cigarette stubs. The waste of cigarette stubs reacts with any kinds of pathogenic fungus such as Fusarium oxysporum, Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes, Rigidoporus lignosus, and Sclerotium rolfsii. The usage of cigarette stubs as an alternative raw material for making organic pesticides can make cigarette stubs considerable as a recycled product that reduces the environment's waste. The results obtained by plants treated with biopesticides effectively resist pest attacks and support plants to naturally develop antibodies. The score of Intensity Attack (IS) from Terminalia cattapa plant applied by the biopesticides for 10 days observation results in the amount of 3.953%, with a total of 34 normal leaves and a total of 12 broken leaves. The other result of the Terminalia cattapa applied with chemical pesticides gives 12.31% of intensity attack and 12.18% of intensity attack without any treatment. This research concluded that tobacco could inhibit the attack pest of the Terminalia cattapa plant.
