Effect of <I>Ocimum sanctum</I> on Noise-induced Changes in Immune Parameters

Abstract: The effect of an ethanolic extract of Ocimum sanctum on noise‐stress‐induced changes in immune parameters has been studied in albino rats. Acute noise stress caused leukopaenia, a significant increase in plasma corticosterone concentrations, and significant increases in thymus weight and cell count. It also caused a significant decrease in the antibody titre, and in spleen weight and cell count. There was no change in lymph node and adrenal gland weight, nor in inhibition of leukocyte migration. Pretreatment o… Show more

“…Our recent studies have shown acute noise to be a potent stressor causing both immunosuppression as well as immunoenhancement and pretreatment of the rats with the ethanol extract of OS leaves returned the stress altered values to normal levels (Archana and Namasivayam, 2000b). Our present study has shown that administration of the cold and the cold homogenized extract of the OS leaves has a similar stress alleviating effect in albino rats.…”

“…In the search for an effective antidote for noise stress we found that pretreatment of rats subjected to acute noise with the ethanol extract of Ocimum sanctum (OS) was very effective in alleviating the stress-induced changes and had no side effects (Archana and Namasivayam, 2000b). Many Indians consume small quantities of OS leaves/ extracts either as an offering after divine worship in temples or as an additive in food and beverages.…”

“…Short-term or low-intensity sound such as the music of Mozart can enhance immune function by decreasing total IgE levels and latexspecific production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and skewing the cytokine pattern toward a Th1 type (Kimata, 2003). However, prolonged exposure to noise, such as traffic and mechanical sounds, impairs immune function by decreasing the number and activity of immune cells such as T-lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells and phagocytes (Folch et al, 1991;Archana and Namasivayam, 2000;Pascuan et al, 2014;Vasilyeva et al, 2017).…”
