Effect of Hemostatics Used During Operations for Digestive Organ on Cancer Cells Present in the Peritoneal Cavity

Abstract: We investigated effects of hemostatics used during operations for digestive organ on cancer cells present in the peritoneal cavity using BALB/c mice inoculated with Meth A tumor cells (fibrosarcoma) intraperitoneally (i.p.) and C3H/He mice inoculated with MH134 tumor cell (hepatic cell carcinoma) i.p. Microfibrillar collagen hemostat (Avitene) or fibrinogen preparation (Beriplast P) did not affect survivals of those tumor-bearing mice. Gelatin sponge (Spongel)prolonged survivals of MH134 tumor-bearing mice. Li… Show more

“…1 A review of the literature since 1900 failed to reveal an earlier study to report that bovine gelatin has anti-tumor activity on mice in vivo and in vitro. In this study, we investigated effect of various kinds of gelatin on proliferation of murine benign and maligant cells.…”

“…Takagi et al 28 reported that brin sealant may inhibit cancer cells from detaching and spreading during surgery in mice, thus preventing the recurrence of peritonitis carcinomatosa. Kubota et al 29 carried out experiments in mice and reported that sponges can inhibit the growth of MH134 tumor cells. However, we did not nd any studies on esophageal cancer, and the effect of brin sealant on tumor growth needs further investigation.…”
