Mitogenic Activity of Gelatin to Murine Spleen Cells

Abstract: We reported previously that gelatin stimulates the growth of spleen cells in vitro. Tritium thymidine (3H-TdR) uptake into phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated spleen cells as well as intact spleen cells was augmented by gelatin. These findings suggest that gelatin serves as a mitogen for lymphoid cells. In this study, the target of action of gelatin was investigated. Tritium thymidine uptake into T cell-rich fraction was enhanced by incubation with 7.5 mg/ml of gelatin for 48 hours. The level of 3H-TdR uptake … Show more

“…The degradation process may expose some of the active groups in the gelatin molecules or release small molecule signaling factors. The degradation product amino acids also provide nutrition for the cells and promote further cell proliferation . Therefore, the use of gelatin as a scaffold component can significantly improve cell proliferation.…”

“…1 We reported afterward that the targets of the action of liquid form BB gelatin is mainly T cells. 6 In this study, we investigated effect of various kinds of gelatin on proliferation of murine benign and malignant cells. PS gelatin suppressed 3 H-TdR uptake into 3 kinds of murine tumor cells in a time dependent manner.…”

“…2 Afterward, we observed that BB gelatin stimulates proliferation of murine spleen cells, especially T cells 2 and that porcine skin (PS) gelatin inhibits proliferation of several kinds of murine tumor cells followed by apoptosis of those tumor cells. 3 In this study, we used two kinds of gelatin (BB and PS gelatins) and two sorts of murine cells (spleen cells of Balb/c mice and the malignant counterpart, RL?…”
