In the welding process, there are many factors that need to be considered, including heat input, cooling rate, the material being welded, and the use of added materials, if these factors are not considered, they can cause cracks in the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) 1045 material. to determine the effect of preheat variations on tensile strength, the effect of cooling media on tensile strength, and to determine the interaction of preheat variations and cooling media on tensile strength. This research method used experimentally by varying the preheat temperature 250⁰C, 325⁰C, 400⁰C, and the cooling medium was lime, sand, and normal air, then tensile test was carried out. The results showed that the cooling medium affected the tensile strength with the highest tensile strength of 64.35 kg/mm2 on the sand cooling medium, while the preheat variation had no effect on the tensile strength as shown by a graph close to the horizontal straight at the tensile strength ranging from 60 kg/mm2, interaction between preheat and cooling medium has no effect on tensile strength. This is indicated by the tensile strength values that are almost close to each preheat point, namely at a temperature of 250⁰C between 53-67 kg/mm2, at 325⁰C between 56-60 kg/mm2, and a temperature of 400⁰C between 51-64 kg/mm2. In this study it can be concluded that a good cooling medium uses sand media with a preheat temperature of 250⁰C.

Baja AISI 1018 merupakan baja karbon rendah yang banyak diaplikasikan secara luas dalam dunia industri. Namun demikian, baja AISI 1018 dengan prasyarat sifat mekanik dan ketahanan korosi yang baik adalah sebuah keharusan sehingga dapat diaplikasikan dalam kondisi pembebanan yang tertentu. Perlakuan panas memiliki peran yang dominan untuk mencapai kondisi sifat mekanik baja AISI 1018 sesuai yang diinginkan. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan eksperimen dengan memberikan perlakuan panas dalam berbagai variasi (quenching, annealing, dan normalizing) terhadap baja AISI 1018 untuk dapat mengubah struktur mikro dan meningkatkan sifat mekaniknya. Proses karakterisasi strukrur mikro dan sifat mekanik baja AISI 1018 dilakukan dengan pengamatan metalografi, pengujian kekerasan, dan pengujian tarik. Dari hasil penelitian ini didapatkan bahwa bahwa baja AISI 1018 hasil perlakuan panas quenching memperlihatkan transformasi struktur mikro yang berbeda dengan spesimen lainnya dan ditandai dengan kehadiran fasa martensit yang berefek pada peningkatan sifat mekanik yang signifikan yaitu nilai kekuatan tarik (2185 MPa) dan kekerasan (222,5 HV). Dengan demikian, baja AISI 1018 hasil perlakuan panas quenching dapat digunakan dalam kondisi pembebanan tertentu dan memiliki umur pakai (cycle time) yang lebih panjang.

Coupling links and hooked plates constitute the primary components of automatic couplers in trains, enduring substantial tensile and compressive loads during train connections. This study endeavours to enhance the strength of S45C material through heat treatment techniques. The research commenced with the preparation of JIS S45C tensile test specimens adhering to ASTM E8 standards. The material's chemical composition was validated using an Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES). Six heat treatment variations were employed, including quench oil without tempering (QO), quenching water without tempering (QW), quenching oil tempered at 660°C (QOT660), quenching water tempered at 660°C (QWT660), quenching oil tempered at 550°C (QOT550), quenching water tempered at 550°C (QWT550), alongside untreated conditions (NT) for comparison. The efficacy of heat treatment was evaluated through tensile testing, optical metallographic analysis, and micro-Vickers hardness tests. QO and QW scenarios were excluded from the tensile tests. Results revealed that QWT550 demonstrated the most substantial enhancement in material yield, exhibiting a 115% increase. Moreover, hardness testing indicated superior hardness in QWT550 specimens compared to other tempered variants. The metallographic analysis illustrated the formation of identical and smooth martensitic structures. Overall, the combination of cooling heat treatment and tempering proved sufficient to meet the design requirements of hooked plates and coupling links for automatic couplers.
