Effect of Growing Media, Bio and Chemical Fertilization on the Production of Gladiolus (Cv. Novalux) Corms From Cormlets

Abstract: The experimental trial was consummated during two successive seasons (2011/ 2012 and 2012/ 2013) at the nursery of Hort. Res. Inst., Giza, Egypt. It was intended to find out the solve of one of the most important problems faced the production of Gladiolus in Egypt, i.e. the deterioration of corms production year after year. So, the independent as well as the combined effects of different growing media (sand, sand/compost 1:1 v/v and sand/sewage sludge 3:1 v/v), fertilization treatments (NPK at 1:2:1, kristalon… Show more

“…In general, N, P and K nutrients (whether traditional or nano) play a vital role in enhancing gladiolus growth and development as reported by a lot of authors e.g. [38], [39], [40], [41], [26], [42], [43], [44]. In this regard [45][46] reported that mineral NPK fertilization increased both flowering parameters (length of spike, rachis length, number of florets/spike, first floret diameter and fresh weight) and some chemical constituents (N, P, K and total sugars % in corms and total chlorophyll in leaves).…”

“…To meet the production demand from gladiolus as a famous beloved cut flower all over the world, the availability of high-quality corms is a prerequisite matter. Local production of gladiolus corm in Egypt has deteriorated year after year, as it has been reported by several specialists and authors such as Khattab et al (2016) and Bazaraa (2014). Accordingly, gladiolus cut flower production in Egypt has depended on the annually imported corms from the Netherlands.…”

“…Novalux concluded that, actosol treatment at 2.5 ml/l as a soil drench proved its superiority in increasing corms quality. Additionally, Bazaraa et al (2014) on Gladiolus cv. Novalux.…”
