Effect of Galactooligosaccharides on Calcium Absorption in Rats.

Abstract: SummaryThe effect of transgalactosylated oligosaccharides (TOS), which are oligosaccharides that are unhydrolyzed in the small intestine and are fermented by the intestinal bacteria, on calcium absorption was examined in male Wistar rats for 10 days. The apparent calcium absorp tion ratios and the apparent retention ratios were significantly higher in the rats fed TOS-containing diets (5 or 10 g/100g of diet). In the second experiment, the cecum was ligated in situ and calcium absorption from the cecum was obs… Show more

“…It is known that low pH in the intestine suppresses the production of putrid substances (Mitsuoka, 1982), and promotes mineral absorption (Rémésy et al, 1993;Chonan & Watanuki, 1995). Propionate and butyrate also improved constipation by stimulating the intestinal inner wall and promoting intestinal peristalsis (Yajima, 1984;Okazaki et al, 1990).…”

“…For details of diet, see Table 1 in the large intestine. Also, GOS-feeding increased the absorption of the minerals 4,5,6 . Chonan and Watanuki 4,5,6 showed the stimulating effects of GOS on calcium absorption may be partly associated with increased solubility of calcium and the fluid content in the intestinal lumen.…”

In the present study, partially gastrectomy caused anemia, induced by reduced iron absorption could be partially prevented by the inclusion of GOS + PDX in the diet (Figures.…”
