Digitainability and Financial Performance: Evidence from the Serbian Banking Sector

This study aimed to explore the cross-section of digitalization and sustainability in banking and its effect on bank performance. The sample consisted of all of the banks (n = 25) operating in the Republic of Serbia from 2011 to 2020. The research results show that the banks focusing on digitalization and sustainability are profitable, even in the face of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Furthermore, using the Pearson’s correlation, the study shows that the level of investment in digital transformation has a strong relationship with the net result. We advocate that digitainability in banking is an important factor in uncertain times and should be fostered and included in bank strategies in the post-COVID 19 world. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that provides insight into digitainability and bank performance.

Teachers’ ICT implementation is of growing importance in classrooms; currently, technology has become an essential ingredient of teachers’ practice. The study explores the implication of teachers’ competencies on ICT implementation in universities. The empirical literature has established a considerable research gap despite teachers’ competencies being critical in ICT implementation. The study presents a university survey in Kenya on 475 teachers exploring the implication of teachers’ ICT competencies on ICT implementation and teachers’ skills and knowledge. The descriptive statistics results indicated a mean of 4.279 and a Spearman correlation of 0.618 between teachers’ competencies and use of software tools, implying that teachers’ level of competencies increases as they use and employ software tools when teaching. The chi-square test statistic indicated results of 288.498 and a significance of P < 0.005 . The P value is less than the chosen significance level α = 0.05, which checks for independence on the teachers’ competencies on ICT implementation. Therefore, implying that the null hypothesis was rejected at the 5% level of testing. The conclusion was that there is significant evidence that teachers’ competencies significantly influence ICT implementation. Therefore, this study forms a foundation informing all universities stakeholders on their responsibility to support teachers in implementing technology in their instruction.

Digitalization is one of the most urgent problems for Russia; companies need to gain a competitive advantage, increase their efficiency and improve business performance. The aim of the study is to identify the relationship between the financial performance of Russian companies and the degree of digitalization of their business processes. Operating profit was chosen as the main financial indicator reflecting the results of the current core activities of the companies. To calculate the digitalization index, McKinsey information data was taken on six parameters: digital marketing, digital product experience, e-commerce, electronic customer relationship management (E-CRM), social networks. The authors used regression analysis of data from 482 companies from 20 industries for the period 2017–2019 as a research method for testing the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that the digitalization index has a positive effect on the operational efficiency of companies, but the degree of influence differs depending on the industry, age, and size of the enterprise. The authors concluded that the greatest effect from digitalization is observed among companies with traditionally high digital maturity. These are companies from the financial, technology, or communications industry, where business digitalization is vital and where a slowdown in digital transformation processes can push such enterprises far back in the ranking. Assessing the impact of digitalization of Russian companies on their operational activities will allow the management of companies to choose the right strategy in matters of digital transformation, which will ensure the company’s competitiveness, increase its efficiency and contribute to its development. On a national scale, the results of this study can help decide which industries should be subsidized for digital innovation.
