Effect of different gamma radiation doses on the germination and seedling growth of wheat and triticale cultivars

Abstract: Plan breeding of wheat and triticale in Argentina is based on the objective of improving an individual crop, with respect to resistance to drought stress. The use of gamma radiation holds promise for physiological crop improvement. The objective of this study was to determine and compare the effect of different gamma radiation doses on the germination and seedling growth of Argentine wheat and triticale cultivars. Seeds of wheat cv. Baguette 10 and triticale cv. Espinillo INTA were irradiated at doses of 0, 50… Show more

“…Gamma irradiation represents a recent technology to improve the qualitative and quantitative attributes of many economical plant species [ 3 , 16 ]. It solves many agricultural crop problems such as contamination, destruction of insect pests and microbial plant diseases resulted in postharvest losses [ 14 , 23 ].…”

“…The varieties were characterized by a normal level of spontaneous aberrations, slightly higher due to the lower modern plant genome stability, which has been repeatedly noted for modern cultivated plants (Caplin & Willey, 2018;Oney-Birol & Balkan, 2019). It is also typical for this mutagen that in high concentrations, the number of fragments could be lower than the number of bridge-type abnormalities with the presence of lagging chromosomes and micronucleus, which in general is not always seen for other supermutagens or is not so uniform depending on an object of action genotype (Nazarenko, 2016;Pane et al, 2018).…”
