The growing restriction of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) use in farming animals has raised a concern regarding the viability of the animal production system. In this new context, feed additives with proven positive impact on intestinal health may be used as strategy to avoid losses on performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a protected blend of organic acids and essential oils [P(OA+EO)] on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal health of broiler chickens. A total of 1,080 Cobb × Cobb 500 male broilers were randomly distributed in four treatments with 10 replicates (27 birds/each). Treatments were as follow: non-challenged control; challenged control; AGP (enramycin at 10 g/t); and P(OA+EO) at 300 g/t. All birds on challenged groups were challenged with Eimeria spp. at 1 day and with Clostridium perfringens at 11, 12, and 13 days. Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated until 42 days. At 17 days, one bird per pen was orally gavaged with fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (FITC-d) and blood samples were collected for FITC-d detection to assess intestinal permeability. At 21 days, apparent ileal nutrient and energy (IDE) digestibility, intestinal macroscopic and histologic alterations (ISI) and, expression of mucin2 (MUC2), claudin1 (CLDN1), and occludin (OCLN) genes in the jejunum were evaluated. From 1 to 42 days, birds from the non-challenged and P(OA+EO) groups had greater (P < 0.001) BWG compared to challenged control and AGP groups. The challenged control group presented the worst FCR (P < 0.001). IDE was 106 kcal/kg greater when broilers were fed P(OA+EO) compared to the challenged control group. Broilers supplemented with P(OA+EO) had improved intestinal integrity with lower blood FITC-d concentration and ISI scores, and greater expression of MUC2, CLDN1, and OCLN genes compared to the challenged control group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the P(OA+EO) and the AGP led to increased growth performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal health of challenged broilers. A marked difference occurred in favor of the P(OA+EO), suggesting that this blend may be used to improve intestinal health and broiler growth performance in AGP free programs.

The aim of this study was to determine whether infection by Clostridium perfringens negatively interferes with the oxidant/antioxidant status and activity of energy metabolism enzymes (creatine kinase (CK), adenylate kinase (AK) and pyruvate kinase (PK)), as well as the zootechnical performance of broilers. A completely randomized design with three treatments, with five replications by treatment, and 10 birds by repetitions was used: T1: non-infected group; T2: group infected with C. perfringens; T3: group infected with C. perfringens, and basal diet with performance enhancers (antibiotic and coccidiostatic). At 21 days of age, the birds were experimentally infected orally with 4.0 x 108 CFU/mL C. perfringens. At strategic moments during the experimental period, zootechnical data and blood samples were collected. There were no significant differences among treatments in terms of weight gain, feed intake, or feed conversion. At 20 days, heterophils counts were significantly lower in the T3 group birds than in the others. A significant reduction in the number of total leukocytes, because of the lower number of lymphocytes, was observed in groups T2 and T3 on day 34. Neutrophil and monocyte counts were significantly lower in group T3 than in group T1 on day 34. On day 42, there were significantly lower levels of total protein and globulin in birds in T3 than in T1. On day 27, PK activity was significantly higher in groups T2 and T3; similar behavior observed on day 34 when CK and PK activities in T2 and T3 were significantly higher than those of T1. AK activity was significantly higher in the serum of T3 birds than in those of the other groups at 34 days. At 41 days, CK and PK activities were significantly higher only in birds in group T3 compared to other groups. The levels of reactive oxygen species and lipoperoxidation, as well as the activity of glutathione S-transferase, were significantly lower in birds from group T3 compared to other groups at age 20 days. After a challenge with C. perfringens, there were fluctuations in the behavior of oxidative stress biomarkers; in particular, at 41 days of age, birds in T2 had elevated levels of lipoperoxidation, different from what was seen in birds in T3 that consumed feed with a performance enhancer. Preliminary results suggest that clostridiosis affects serum activity of enzymes in the phosphotransfer network, requiring compensatory enzymatic changes in an attempt to maintain energy homeostasis. In addition, the infection reduces the number of inflammatory cells and causes oxidant/antioxidant imbalance that may contribute to the pathophysiology of the disease. Además, la infección reduce el número de células inflamatorias y provoca un desequilibrio en el estado oxidante / antioxidante que puede contribuir a la fisiopatología de la enfermedad.

Currently, dysbiosis, rupture of the intestinal barrier and inflammation have become concerns of industrial poultry, since they culminate in the physiological and productive impairment of birds. The objective was to discuss the role of the intestinal microbiota of birds in animal development, as well as to highlight the benefits and/or losses caused by these microorganisms. The methodology adopted was a descriptive study, with a bibliographic review of scientific papers published in different indexed bases, with a time frame of the last decades. It was found that the use of sequencing the RNA ribosomal gene (rRNA) 16S is an important tool to identify and enumerate the intestinal bacteria present in production birds. Regarding the composition of the microbiota, in the small intestine there are mainly Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Bifidobacterium, Bacterioides, Clostridium, Fusobacterium and coliforms. In the large intestine, Lactobacillus, Bacterioides, Proteobacteria, Bacillus, Clostridium and Bifidobacterium. In the small intestine, bacteria participate in metabolism by improving nutrient absorption, hydrolyze polysaccharides to produce short-chain fatty acids, which will be absorbed and participate in important metabolic pathways in the supply of carbon and energy sources to birds. Despite the benefits of the microbiota in promoting a stable intestinal environment, in unfavorable situations, such as inadequate breeding, it can act as pathogens, produce toxic metabolites and impair the productive performance of birds.
