“…Anyway, it appears that salbutamol did not possess a potent anabolic effect in vivo in humans after oral intake. In parallel, a number of animal studies [2,16,20,21] demonstrated a significant decrease in fat mass after chronic beta-agonist administration, with a possible direct inhibition in leptin gene expression [11]. However, although we found a high correlation for all subjects between leptin and percent fat mass, we did not find any change in fat mass or in basal leptin concentrations after SAL intake.…”

“…Chronic administration of specific β 2 -adrenergic agonists, especially clenbuterol and salmeterol, has been shown to increase skeletal muscle strength and size in several species following relatively short periods of administration [4,19 -21]. In addition, chronic treatment with β 2 -agonist was associated with a decline in body fat [2,16,20,21] and circulating concentrations of leptin [16] in animals, with a possible direct inhibition in leptin gene expression [11] by this class of drug.To our knowledge, only a few studies have examined the effects of chronic oral salbutamol intake in healthy non-asthmatic human subjects on body composition and a possible relationship with performance during anaerobic exercise. As a matter of fact, there are two studies [5,13] which demonstrate that chronic salbutamol intake does not lead to any change in body weight and composition but does increase voluntary muscle strength in man during static exercise.…”

“…However, the specific mechanisms that mediate reproductive and immune functions remain unclear [2]. Classic knowledge, for example, involving melatonin [3,4] is unable to explain completely all the reproductive and immunological events. Thus, other factors involved in regulation of immune and reproductive functions should be investigated by considering the seasonal modifications of these functions.…”

“…Conversely, the effect of photoperiod or exogenous melatonin on the time of the last ovulation in autumn is controversial. In adult mares, melatonin treatment fails to change the date of the last ovulation [41,42]. In horses [12,14,39,41,43-48], as in ewes [49], different experimental approaches indicate that the annual reproductive rhythm has a strong endogenous component.…”
