Effect of crocin on aged rat kidney through inhibition of oxidative stress and proinflammatory state

Abstract: This study evaluated whether crocin, a bioactive component of saffron, has a protective effect on kidney through reducing the oxidative stress and inflammatory response in aged rats. In this study the changes in activities of antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation, glutathione (GSH) levels and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum and renal tissue were evaluated by ELISA and RT-PCR, respectively. The middle and aged rats were given intraperitoneal injections of crocin (10, 20, 30 mg/kg/day… Show more

“…Crocin is one of the main and active constituents isolated from saffron. It has been shown previously that crocin exhibits multiple activities, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects in various cell types ( 7 ). Lv et al ( 8 ) reported that crocin exerts an anti-oxidative effect against H 2 O 2 -induced apoptosis in retinal ganglion cells.…”

“…In such cases, therefore, certain therapies such as surgery, chemical pharmacotherapy, and psychiatric treatments can be useful 61,62 . It is obvious that medicinal herbs and their products via antioxidant activities and anti inflammatory properties can be benefit for improvement a lot of diseases [63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75] .…”

“…Due to kidneys receive many vessels, it may concentrate various drugs and toxic chemicals within the renal cortex and medulla rejoins [2]. Almost all of the nephrotoxic agents bind to the brush border receptors of the renal proximal convoluted tubules and concentrate within proximal tubular cells [3]. Imbalance between oxidantantioxidant system is the main mechanism of renal injury [3].…”
