Effect of concurrent resistance and sprint training on body composition and cardiometabolic health indicators in masters cyclists

Abstract: In older previously sedentary individuals endurance training imposes a more effective stimulus to enhance cardiometabolic health compared with resistance or sprint training. We examined the effect of replacing a portion of endurance training with combined resistance and/or sprint training and how this influences cardiometabolic health indicators in masters endurance cyclists. Twenty-seven well-trained male road cyclists (53.7±8.2 years) were allocated to a resistance and track sprint-cycling training group (RT… Show more

“…Obesity increases the risk of metabolic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, which lead to increases in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality [3,4]. Obesity can be represented by various measurements, such as body mass index (BMI) [5] waist circumference (WC) [6], and percentage body fat (PBF) [7].…”

“…These studies described the increase in maximum oxygen consumption in patients with hypertension, 41 overweight adults 42,43 and patients with cardiovascular disease. 21 As previously reported, the reduction in VO 2peak is closely related to morbidity and mortality in cardiac patients. 1,8 It represents an important marker for longevity and quality of life in those patients 1,8,44 .…”

“…Improvements in muscle resistance and endurance capacity, following combined endurance and strength training [ 11 ], sprint and resistance training [ 2 , 4 ], and endurance and track sprint training [ 30 ], have been well described in the literature. However, specific training using multicomponent modes (i.e., explosive, resistance and endurance exercises) with specific periodization is less debated in relation to SFSs[ 11 ].Body-weight exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, are known to stimulate large muscle groups, which require higher blood volume, higher oxygen consumption and more flexibility [ 31 ], thus suggesting that an SCTC format is the best alternative to improving cardiovascular and motor performances.…”
