Effect of compatibilizer and silane coupling agent on physical properties of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer/ethylene‐1‐butene copolymer/clay nanocomposite foams

Abstract: In this study an attempt was made to obtain lower density of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/ ethylene-1-butene copolymer (EtBC) foams without sacrificing mechanical properties. For this purpose EVA/EtBC/clay nanocomposite foams were prepared. To investigate the effect of compatibilizer and silane coupling agent on the physical properties of the EVA/EtBC/clay foams, maleic anhydride-grafted EtBC (EtBC-g-MAH) and the most commonly used silane coupling agent in rubbers, bis(3-triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasu… Show more

“…Generally, the nature of solid phase, cell structure, and density largely governs the mechanical properties of the polymeric foams . Because of the difference in foam density of EVA/NR blends with different fillers and their amounts, the tensile strength of the EVA/NR/Na‐MMT, EVA/NR/organoclay, and EVA/NR/(china clay) foams were normalized by their corresponding density and the results are plotted against filler content, as shown in Fig.…”

“…However, such challenges can be resolved up to greater extent using compatibilizers or coupling agents which reduces the difference in polar characters of fillers and rubbers and leads to improved rubber-filler interactions [10,11]. Typically, on industrial scale, the modification of silica surface is done by introduction of coupling agents or compatibilizers like silanes, which reduce the filler-filler interaction and also enhance the rubber-filler interaction through chemical linkages between the silica surface and rubber chains [12,13].…”

“…The system can be either polymer blend plus filler or a hybrid of a filler with polymer matrix. For example, Kim et al created (ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer)/(ethylene‐1‐butene copolymer)/clay composite foams with lower densities without sacrificing the mechanical properties. In addition, Spiridon et al studied the enzymatic degradation of PVA/starch/montmorillonite.…”
