Baru (Dipteryx alata Vogel) is a native fruit of the Brazilian savanna that provides a nutritive oil, which also has medicinal properties. Baru fruits were collected in central-western Brazil, and the oil was obtained by pressing the seeds. The Baru oil was heated at 110 ∘ C for 24 h, and its oxidative stability was investigated by using fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy. The data showed that both absorption and fluorescence were able to precisely monitor the oil degradation induced by the thermooxidative process. The results revealed a rapid growth of the primary compounds generation in the first 16 hours of degradation. Significant amounts of secondary compounds began to be generated after 14 hours.

Antioxidants are an alternative to prevent or slow the degradation of the biofuel. In this study, it was evaluated the oxidative stability of B100 biodiesel from soybean oil in the presence of three commercial synthetic antioxidants, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), pure or blended, from the experimental design of simplex-centroid mixture. The reaction order and rate constant were also calculated for all tests. The treatment containing pure TBHQ proved to be the most effective, proven by design, the optimum mix obtained and the rate constant. Binary and ternary mixtures containing TBHQ also showed appreciable antioxidant effect.Keywords: antioxidants, design of mixing and biofuel. INTRODUÇÃOOs combustíveis fósseis, usados atualmente em larga escala como fonte de energia são recursos finitos e extremamente poluidores. Diante da necessária busca por fontes de energias limpas e renováveis, o estudo de biocombustíveis tem se apresentado como uma alternativa viável para a solução destes problemas. 1Dentre os biocombustíveis destaca-se o biodiesel, que pode ser definido como sendo um mono-alquil éster de ácido graxo derivado de fontes renováveis, podendo ser produzido a partir da reação de óleos vegetais ou gordura animal com um álcool, geralmente metanol, na presença de um catalisador, normalmente uma base forte, como hidróxido de sódio ou de potássio. Este método de produção é conhecido como transesterificação. 2-6Algumas características devem ser consideradas para o biodiesel como ter boa biodegradabilidade, ter uma inerente lubrificidade na forma pura, apresentar competitividade com o diesel em termos de propriedades combustíveis e, além disso, não contribui para a emissão de aromáticos e óxidos de enxofre. No entanto, ao contrário dos combustíveis fósseis, que são relativamente inertes e mantêm as suas características essenciais pouco alteradas ao longo da estocagem, o biodiesel degrada mais rapidamente com o tempo e pode alterar-se devido à ação do ar, da luz, temperatura e umidade. O seu contato com contaminantes, tanto de natureza inorgânica quanto microbiana, também tende a introduzir variações na qualidade do produto, sendo a oxidação decorrente da sua exposição ao ar atmosférico um dos principais problemas de degradação a que o biodiesel está sujeito.6 Alterações de qualidade do biodiesel e misturas, como elevação da sua acidez, da sua corrosividade e a formação de produtos indesejáveis, como polímeros e depósitos, foram observadas ao longo do tempo de estocagem. 8,9 A estabilidade à oxidação é, portanto, um parâmetro de grande importância para o controle da qualidade do biodiesel. Palm Biochar-Based Sulphated Zirconium (Zr-AC-HSO3) Catalyst for Methyl Ester Production from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate

A palm waste kernel shell biomass was converted into bio-based sulphonated activated carbon and further used for preparation of a sulphated zirconium-doped activated catalyst (Zr-AC-HSO3) by wet impregnation method. The structural, physicochemical, morphological, textural, and thermal characteristics of the synthesized Zr-AC-HSO3 catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (TPD-NH3), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The catalytic activity of the 20 wt% Zr-AC-HSO3 catalyst was further evaluated for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD). This study achieved a maximum fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield of 94.3% and free fatty acid (FFA) conversion of 96.1% via the esterification over 20 wt% Zr-AC-HSO3 using 3 wt% catalyst concentration, 15:1 methanol:PFAD molar ratio at 75 °C for 3 h. The experiments to test for reusability showed that the spent catalyst was stable for five successive reaction cycles, with a FFA conversion of 80% in the fifth cycle, without additional treatment. The critical fuel features of the synthesized PFAD methyl ester were determined and were within the range of EN14214 and ASTM D6751 standards.
