Effect of chitosan solutions with or without fluoride on the protection against dentin erosion in vitro

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the protective effect of experimental solutions containing chitosan at different viscosities with or without fluoride (TiF 4 /NaF) on dentin loss in vitro. Bovine dentin samples (n = 15) were prepared and allocated to one of the following treatments: (i) 0.5% chitosan (500 mPas); (ii) 0.5% chitosan (2,000 mPas); (iii) 0.042% NaF and 0.049% TiF 4 ; (iv) as (iii) with addition of 0.5% chitosan (500 mPas); (v) as (iii) with addition of 0.5% chitosan (2,000 mPas); (vi) commercia… Show more

“…Taking this idea in mind, it is expected improvement of the protective effect of TiF 4 toothpaste, already tested 17 , with the inclusion of chitosan into the formulae. Recently, we have shown that solutions containing TiF 4 /NaF and chitosan had a protective effect against enamel wear similar to the positive control (Elmex® GABA solution, containing Sn 2+ and F − ) 23 , while for dentin, no improvement in the effect of the fluoridated solution was seen with the addition of chitosan 24 .…”

“…Electron microscopy has also proven to be a valuable tool for recent studies of treatments meant to prepare the tooth to bond to resin [81], enhance dental appearance [82], combat and prevent erosion and caries [83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90], or treat sensitivity [64,[91][92][93][94]. Enamel erosion, gum recession from gingivitis, or fractured teeth often result in sensitivity from exposed dentin [95,96].…”

“…Importantly, this intervention enables avoiding root canal treatment, as an endodontically treated tooth is weaker and more prone to fractures [ 67 ]. It was proven that chitosan could reduce dentine loss when used in the treatment procedure [ 68 ]. Moreover, chitosan–collagen scaffolds have an odontogenic effect and may prevent endodontic treatment due to dentine tissue production [ 69 ].…”
