Effect of an antifungal denture liner on the saliva yeast count in patients with denture stomatitis: a pilot study

Abstract: Although in vitro studies on the release of antifungal agents from tissue conditioners have been done, no in vivo research on the topic could be found. The purpose of this study was to determine the in vivo effect of an antifungal agent released from a tissue conditioner on the salivary yeast count. Forty edentulous patients with denture stomatitis caused by Candida albicans were divided in two groups. Group 1 (control) was treated with a tissue conditioner only. “…Also, 14‐day interval is the recommended period for treatment of denture stomatitis with conventional topical antifungals such as nystatin (Silva et al , ). The effectiveness demonstrated by nystatin in the resilient materials tested in this study corroborates the reports of other authors (Thomas and Nutt, ; Quinn, ; Schneid, ; Geerts et al , ; Falah‐Tafti et al , ).…”

“…(Douglas and Walker, ; Geerts et al , ). The rare detection of fungal strains resistant to nystatin and their accessible cost are other advantages of this drug compared with other antifungals (Geerts et al , ). Similar results to those obtained in this study by addition of nystatin to a tissue conditioner were previously obtained (Truhlar et al , ).…”

“…The results of the present study implicate that Ag° added tissue conditioner might act like latent antimicrobial material and it could provide the additional benefit of antimicrobial effect even if dentures are worn at night, therefore, could be used as an one of the alternative therapy for denture stomatitis resistant to conventional treatment or geriatric denture bearing patients under medically compromised status 34. However, further studies are still required to clarify the optimal concentration of Ag°, regarding the silver content, the possible disruption of oral microflora and toxic effects of silver with excess Ag°and mechanical stability should be also considered for the proper and safe clinical application 35…”
