Tapia’s syndrome is charaterized by damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (branch of the Xth) and the hypoglossal nerve (XIIth), and in some cases, the accessory nerve (XIth) may also be affected. The cause is usually trauma to the point where the hypoglossal and vagus intersect. This results in lingual hemiparesis, vocal fold paralysis and dysphagia. Objective: to present the results of speech therapy in a case that evolved with Tapia´s Syndrome after the excision of a tumour in the parapharyngeal space. Case report: male patient, 71 years old, submitted to excision of a Schwannoma in the vagus nerve, with parotid invasion. Evolved with: dysarthria; severe dysphagia; lack of flow control; dysphonia; facial paralysis and dyspnoea. Six months after surgery, thyroplasty and botulinum toxin injections were performed in the cricopharyngeal muscle and salivary glands, which ensured a temporary improvement in voice and control of salivary flow. Results: The rehabilitation process consisted of stimulating the mobility of the muscles responsible for facial mimicry, reintegration of stomatognathic functions, swallowing and voice. After two years of speech therapy, the patient showed improvement in the mobility of the facial mimic muscles, a slight improvement in the vocal pattern, in addition to an improvement in the breathing pattern. Conclusion: despite the limitations and functional complexities encountered in the postoperative period, there was evidence of improvement in the patient’s quality of life after performing clinical procedures combined with the therapeutic process.

Background and Aims Digital games are among the treatment methods for speech disorders that serve purposes other than mere entertainment. These games have been used for different speech disorders at any age. This study aims to review articles that have used digital games for rehabilitating speech disorders. Methods This study was a scoping review. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched on February 28, 2022, to access the articles on digital games used in rehabilitation of speech disorders without any date restrictions. The search strategy was as follows: (“video game [MeSH term]” OR “computer game” OR “mobile game” OR “serious game” OR gamification [MeSH term]) AND (“speech pathology” OR “speech therapy [MeSH term]” OR “speech disorder [MeSH term]” OR stuttering [MeSH term]). Original interventional and observational studies in English were included. The data were extracted from the relevant articles, including the first author's name, year of publication, country, target group, participants, mobile device/computer‐based, type of game design, language level, number of sessions, and outcome. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results Of 693 retrieved articles, 10 articles were included in this study. Digital games were used for different speech disorders such as apraxia (20%), dysarthria (10%), articulatory hypokinesia in Parkinson's disease (10%), dysphonic disorder (10%), hearing disability (10%), phonological impairment (10%), and speech disorder in autism (10%). Most of the articles (60%) used a mobile device‐based game. Phonemes (30%), words (30%), and sentences (20%) were the most frequently used language levels in designing digital games. All the reviewed articles reported the positive effect of digital games on speech and the patients' motivation in therapy. Conclusion Digital games can improve patients' speech and motivation in therapy. Although studies showed the positive impact of digital games on speech disorders, personalized speech therapy should be considered in designing these games.

Introdução: A paralisia facial periférica é um distúrbio da motricidade orofacial responsável por trazer impactos negativos em diversos âmbitos na vida dos indivíduos. Entre os profissionais envolvidos no tratamento, o fonoaudiólogo é responsável pelo importante papel de promover a reabilitação das funções orofaciais do indivíduo. Dentre os diversos recursos que este pode utilizar, está o laser de baixa intensidade, ainda pouco investigado na literatura científica. Objetivo: realizar uma revisão integrativa da literatura acerca da utilização e o efeito do laser de baixa intensidade como método terapêutico das paralisias faciais periféricas. Métodos: (1) formulação da pergunta norteadora do estudo “Qual a evidência científica da eficácia, descrita na literatura científica, do uso do laser de baixa intensidade no tratamento da paralisia facial periférica?”; (2) Definição dos descritores, pelo DeCS e MeSH, combinados através do operador booleano AND: Terapia com luz de baixa intensidade; Terapia a laser; Paralisia facial e Paralisia de Bell; (3) Bases de dados PubMed e BIREME; (4) Delimitação dos critérios elegibilidade e (5) coleta e triagem dos artigos. Critérios de Seleção: Utilizar laser como recurso terapêutico e pacientes com paralisia facial em sua metodologia. Resultados: participaram desta revisão 10 artigos que encontraram efeitos positivos da laserterapia utilizando dosagens entre 4 e 105 J/cm2 e comprimentos de onda entre 670 e 1064 nm em um período entre 4 e 20 sessões. Conclusão: os efeitos do laser de baixa potência são benéficos em pacientes acometidos por paralisia facial periférica e potencializam-se quando associados a outros recursos terapêuticos da Fonoaudiologia.
